Bell Microsystems implements carbon neutral policy.

After completing a detailed analysis of its carbon emissions, Bell Microsystems has identified ways to reduce its greenhouse gas production over the next 12 months.  Furthermore, the company is offsetting its current emissions by funding a carbon reduction project which will benefit poor communities in Sudan.

Mark Prior, Head of Sustainable Services, Bell Microsystems, comments:  “As a specialist in implementing Green IT solutions for large UK businesses, Bell Microsystems has always taken steps to limit the environmental impact of its own activities.  Over recent months, we’ve worked closely with Carbon Clear to measure the direct and indirect carbon emissions that result from our day-to-day business processes and then we’ve defined a detailed strategy for reducing our carbon footprint.  We chose to work with Carbon Clear because they work to the ISO14064 standard and they are one of the founding members of the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), which was set up to establish best practice in the industry.  Instead of just selling offsets, Carbon Clear is one of only a few companies that help businesses to achieve real reductions in emissions and then offset the remainder.  The carbon offset programmes they run are all projects that would not have happened without this form of funding – so, by working with Carbon Clear, Bell Microsystems can make a real difference to people’s lives.  Carbon Clear’s offset registry is also audited by a third-party auditor, every year.”

Carbon Clear invests in projects that remove carbon dioxide from the air by replacing polluting technologies with cleaner solutions and planting locally-selected trees.  Carbon Clear’s projects are located in developing countries and are carefully screened to ensure they improve local people’s wellbeing.

Bell Microsystems has invested in the Darfur Low Smoke Stoves Project, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by helping poor families – in El Fasher town – to use modern sources of energy for cooking.   In addition to reducing emissions, the project helps to address ‘energy poverty’, improve health by reducing indoor air pollution and it also reduces the pressure on forest resources in Northern Darfur.

Mark Prior adds:  “In the UK, Bell Microsystems’ portfolio of IT Lifecycle Management Services helps businesses both to improve their carbon footprint and boost IT performance.  We’re very pleased to have this opportunity to help families in Sudan to improve their quality of life and the environment.”
