Bell Microsystems promotes eco-efficient IT solutions
– in conjunction with Sun Microsystems
This year’s Green IT Expo, at The Barbican Exhibition Centre, saw Bell Microsystems working with Sun Microsystems to sponsor the event, while also exhibiting and running joint seminars. The event came hot on the heels of Sun’s announcement of the new Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server – competitive systems can cost as much as 80% more or deliver a quarter of the performance.
With the theme ‘Sustainable Computing for Responsible Business’, the event attracted attendees from large and medium size businesses – plus other organisations, including charities. In addition to keynote speeches, seminars and briefing sessions, the event included an exhibition and networking area. Bell Microsystems and Sun showcased some of Sun’s sustainable computing solutions – including demonstrations of how Sun Ray Ultra Thin Client technology can help organisations to reduce power consumption and extend the working life of desktop IT solutions.
Bell Microsystems personnel were also on hand to discuss how Sun’s eco-efficient technologies – and Bell Microsystems’ IT Lifecycle Management Services – can help customers to save money and reduce environmental impact, throughout the entire IT lifecycle. Bell Microsystems can provide everything from initial consultancy and proof-of-concepts, through to system implementation, ongoing support and – eventually – decommissioning, data-destruction and recycling.
Bell Microsystems and Sun ran joint seminars on Energy Efficient Datacentres; How to Design, Build and Decommission. Laurence James, Eco-Virtualisation Services Marketing Manager, Sun Microsystems, gave attendees a valuable insight into how Sun has been transforming and ‘greening’ its own datacentres. Mark Prior, Head of Sustainable IT Services, Bell Microsystems, gave a detailed presentation on the environmental issues surrounding the selection of new systems and environmentally aware methods of decommissioning and disposal of old IT systems, including the secure destruction of data.
“Awareness of environmental issues has never been higher. More and more organisations are recognising that adopting greener IT practices isn’t just good for the planet, it’s a great way for businesses to reduce their day-to-day running costs,” comments Mark Prior, Head of Sustainable Services, Bell Microsystems. “With today’s high energy prices, the use of eco-efficient technologies can generate significant annual savings on energy costs and cooling requirements – improving an organisation’s bottom-line financial performance, while also helping to improve its Corporate Social Responsibility profile.”
